Nuggets win season and tournament championships

Adult basketball has returned to the city of Avalon after a 4-year drought due to the Pandemic and the recent school renovation. As always the high school team played in the league and benefited greatly from the competition. Although they did not win many games they competed well and showed improvement. They were led by Darren Hall, Matthew Bastida, and Jacob Mello.

The Heat finished in second place in league play and were led by Allen Arneson, Gene “the 3-point machine” Cajigas and “Big D” Dominic Hernandez.

The Lakers finished in 3rd place and were led by Marco Gallegos, Allan Casillas and some old guy who’s still throwing up 3’s in the face of his former players.

The Nuggets, just like in the NBA, emerged as the best team throughout league play and finished with a 10-1 record and the league championship. They were led by “Johnny Boy” Hernandez, former college standout Jalen Manson, and big man Ruben Martinez. Hernandez earned league MVP honors for his outstanding play at both ends of the court. Manson was a force from deep range and strong drives to the basket and Martinez was the leader from the point guard position handling the ball.

At the conclusion of league play the four teams had a brief two-game tournament to see if the Nuggets were still the best team and the answer was yes. The Nuggets defeated the Heat 74-72 in an exciting championship game that came down to the last 30 seconds. Captain Jalen Manson along with league MVP Juan Hernandez and big man Ruben Martinez proved to be too much for the Heat, although they fought valiantly to the very end. They were led by point guard Gene Cajigas from outside and big man Jesse Grange from the inside. Manson earned Tournament MVP honors for his outstanding play.

After the tournament championship game there was a banquet at Catalina Charlie’s to give out awards and celebrate the return of Adult Basketball to Avalon. Thanks to all who participated, especially those who refereed games and worked the score table. A special shout out to Sol Vines who kept score at all games. Thanks also to Allan Casillas for his help and support. Hope to see everyone at our high school games this season!
