The Avalon jobless rate continues to decline. Avalon has been seeing a steady month-to-month decrease of one-tenth-of-a-percent in the jobless rate since August, according to state unemployment data. Avalon saw a 2.3 percent unemployment rate in November, according to data released Friday, Dec. 21, by the California Department of Employment Development’s Labor Market Information Division.

The October jobless rate was 2.4 percent, one-tenth-of-a-percent greater than the November rate. The September jobless rate in Avalon was one-tenth-of-a-percent greater than that. The August rate was 2.6 percent.

California bases unemployment data on where individuals live rather than work. Data for the Two Harbors resort is not included in the monthly unemployment data.

According to the Federal Reserve, a “normal” unemployment rate is between 4 and 5 percent.

Avalon’s jobless numbers are continuing to be better than unemployment rate for Los Angeles County, California and the nation.

Los Angeles saw unemployment increase from a revised 4.6 percent in October to a revised 4.7 in November, according to the California Department of Employment Development’s Labor Market Information Division. (Before the Employment Development Department revised the statistics, the state agency reported a 4.6 percent October jobless rate in LA County.)

“Between September 2018 and October 2018, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County increased by 21,500 jobs to reach 4,568,000,” according to the Employment Development Department. “Leisure and hospitality recorded the largest loss of any sector (down 3,500) over the month. Although accommodations and food services added 1,500 jobs, arts, entertainment and recreation contracted by 5,000 jobs resulting in a net loss.”

Statewide, the November unemployment rate of 4.1 percent was unchanged from October.

The national unemployment rate was better than California’s or LA County’s, though not as good as Avalon’s rate. Nationwide, the November jobless rate was 3.1 percent.

The national jobless rate was unchanged from October.
