Avalon has four options for vacant council seat

The Avalon City Council hasn’t discussed how they will fill the seat vacated by the death of Pam Albers, who died May 19. However, Mayor Anni Marshall told The Islander there were four options:

• Leave the seat open. Albers was elected to a four-year term last April. This option would leave the seat vacant until 2022.

• Have a special election, “which is expensive,” Marshall said.

• Fill the seat with the candidate who received the next highest number of votes in the 2018 election.

Former city manager and former fire chief Steve Hoefs received 391 votes to Albers’ 407 last year.

• Fill the seat with someone selected from the community at large.

The options are likely to be discussed at a future council meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4.
