The Avalon High School Varsity Golf team traveled to Long Beach to play an 18-hole match vs Capistrano Valley Christian at Recreation Park on Feb. 27. Avalon won the match 409-498. Lower score went to Senior Ulises Zavala with a 5 over par 77.

Senior Danny Pedroza had a 79 followed by Seniors Jose Borregano and Carmen Garcia who each shot 84. Senior Juan Chavoya had an 85.

On March 1 we traveled to play Mayfair High School at Lakewood Country Club. It was a 9-hole match and Avalon came out on top with a score of 210. Mayfair had a 273. Low score went to Danny Pedroza and Juan Chavoya who each shot a four over par 40.

On March 3 we traveled Overtown to make a 9 a.m. shotgun start at beautiful Glendora County Club.

This is the third year in a row we have been in the tournament against some of the best teams around Southern California. Unfortunately, this year our team did not play as well there as they had in the past. Low score for Avalon was a 9 over par 81 for senior Ulises Zavala.

Friday, March 8, we hosted Pacifica Christian from Newport Beach. Senior Carmen Garcia and Senior Juan Chavoya led Avalon with an even par 32. Danny Pedroza has a 2 over par 34. Avalon won the match 195-254. Sophomores Stevie Hoefs, Jessie Grainge and freshman Uriel Hernandez played well for Avalon as well.

Saturday morning, we played Pacifica Christian again. Once again Avalon won the match 183-245. Senior Juan Chavoya had the low round with a 3 over par 35. High score for our team was a 5 over 38. In a match six kids play and only five scores count.

Other kids on the team and showing improvement are sophomores Brandon Tamayo, Alex Lira and Junior Vano Peguero.

On Tuesday March 12 we travelled to start league play at Dad Miller against Anaheim Discovery. They are one of the best teams in Southern California. They have won our league the last two years. They are a new school and have some amazing golfers. This year we have the chance to beat them. Look for scores in next week’s paper.

Our next home match is Monday March 18 at 1 p.m. at Catalina Island Golf Course against Webb and then again at home Thursday March 21, at 12:30 against Anaheim Discovery. Come out and watch.
