Avalon gives statement on helicopter crash

A REACH Air Medical Services helicopter apparently crashed following take off on Wednesday night, Sept. 30, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The city of Avalon said the crash occurred off Pebbly Beach.

The crash apparently two lives. Two more people aboard were injured and apparently taken for treatment while one is apparently missing.

“A Eurocopter EC135 crashed into the water near Pebbly Beach Seaplane Base in Avalon, California, around 7:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Five people were on board,” according to the FAA website.

According to multiple news reports, one of the five people aboard the helicopter is missing when the Islander went to press.

“The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates,” the FAA website said.

According to the preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration, The Sept. 30 crash occurred at 7:46 p.m., when the helicopter went “under unknown circumstances into the water, Avalon, CA.”

The Eurocopter’s registration number was N313RX. The FAA described the damage as “substantial”.

According to the FAA, one member of the flight crew and one member of the cabin crew died. One member of the cabin crew suffered serious injuries one passenger suffered minor injuries. One passenger’s injuries were listed as “unknown”.

The day following the crash, REACH Air Medical Services helicopter issued the following statement on Facebook:

“At this time, we are gathering information and coordinating with emergency responders and authorities. Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones and colleagues affected by this tragedy. We are focused on supporting our team and everyone impacted during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for those involved and the ongoing response, we are unable to share additional details at this time.”

The city of Avalon issued the following statement:

“The City of Avalon extends its sincere condolences to everyone affected by the medical evacuation helicopter crash that occurred last night, September 30, off Pebbly Beach.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of those involved. The City is in close communication with the responding agencies as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“We want to acknowledge and thank the first responders and emergency personnel – City of Avalon Fire and Harbor Department, LA County Baywatch, Fire and Sherriff, and the United States Coast Guard–who acted swiftly and courageously during this difficult event. Their swift response saved two individuals. Their continued dedication to safeguarding our community is profoundly appreciated.

“As we learn more, the City of Avalon will share additional information as appropriate.

“In the meantime, we ask our community to join us in keeping all those impacted in our thoughts during this challenging time, and to please respect our first responders and investigators as they continue the recovery efforts.”
