The Avalon High girls volleyball team travelled to Huntington Beach on Saturday to compete against seven other schools at the Liberty Christian Tournament. In a grueling day, the Lancers played eight two-set matches, winning five and losing just two, with a split against host Liberty Christian. Their only two losses were to Firebaugh, one in pool play and in the Gold Championship game, which brought home the second-place trophy for the Lancers.

The Lancers opened 1-1, but then went on a five-match unbeaten streak, sweeping Pilibos, NOVA Academy, Acaciawood and St. Monica Academy. The Lancers battled Firebaugh in the finals but came up just short, losing 25-20 and 25-23.

Head Coach Carlos Martinez said the Lancers played some great defense and were getting some powerful kills.

Martinez provides the following stats: Emily Mello led us with over 48 kills on Saturday and Lizzie Hiniker had over 50 digs 43 serve receives. Aubree Figueroa had 78 assists and 8 aces Alexa Morones had 19 kills and 6 aces. Ximena Moreno had 13 kills and 4 aces. Bella Perez had 11 kills. Araceli Leyva had 8 kills.

“I’m super proud of these girls and how they got better every game in this tournament,” Martinez said.

The Lancers play today Friday Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. against Hamilton, at Avalon High School and Saturday Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. against AGBU.
