The crack of the bat and the cheers from the stands returned in full force as the Avalon Lancers Baseball team celebrated Opening Day in a way the community will not soon forget. This year’s season opener carried special significance, marking not only the beginning of a new baseball season but also the grand reopening of Avalon’s newly refurbished sports field—an important milestone for the community of Avalon, California on Santa Catalina Island.

Families, students, alumni, and community members gathered early, filling the stands and lining the fences to witness the return of baseball after three long years to a field that has long served as a centerpiece for school spirit and community pride. After months of renovation and improvements, the upgraded facility now offers a refreshed playing surface and enhanced amenities designed to support athletes and spectators alike.

The ceremony began with a brief dedication recognizing the collective effort that made the project possible. School leaders, coaches, and community supporters spoke about the importance of maintaining high-quality facilities for student athletes and creating spaces where the entire island community can come together. Student Kanon Quarnstrom was selected to cut the gold ribbon re-opening the field. He was selected from all of the students at Avalon School because of his respect for the school’s Guidelines for Success—Thoughts Create our Reality, Words are Powerful, and Actions Represent Us.

For Avalon’s players, the day represented more than just a first game. Many had watched the transformation of the field throughout the offseason, eagerly awaiting the moment they could take the diamond again. Stepping onto the newly refurbished field for the first time brought an extra sense of pride and excitement.

“This field has always been special to us,” one player shared after warmups. “Seeing it renewed makes us want to play even harder for our school and our community.”

The improvements ensure that Avalon’s athletes have a safe and high-quality environment to practice and compete while preserving a beloved gathering place for island residents. For generations, the field has hosted everything from youth sports to school events, and the renovation ensures it will continue to serve the community for years to come.

When the first pitch was finally thrown by Richard Hernandez–former coach of 35 years with over 400 wins and former alumi of Avalon School, the moment symbolized more than the start of a game—it represented a renewed commitment to athletics, school pride, and community connection. With the season officially underway and the field shining in its new form, Avalon Baseball begins its campaign backed by the enthusiasm of a community that showed up in full force.

Opening Day proved that while facilities can be rebuilt and improved, the spirit of Avalon athletics has always been strong—and now it has a revitalized home field to match.
