Artists make a second excursion to Catalina

Artists made a second trip to Catalina for a Paint Catalina event on July 9.

A second group of artists gathered on Catalina Island recently to put their artistic skills to work on capturing the beauty of Catalina Island. The group’s visit was a joint venture spearheaded by artist Kymberlee Stanley and members of the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association (SOCALPAPA) a group that was formed about 24 years ago. The SOCALPAPA organization promotes the tradition of plein-air painting and tries to encourage and help the growth of the art form.

The group holds events that they call Paint Outs, where groups of artists meet a various locations to paint and share ideas and techniques with fellow artists. Stanley is a member and brought the idea to the attention of SOCALPAPA organizers and the first event was held on June 24. A second was scheduled called ‘Paint Catalina Island’ on July 9.

The artists reportedly enjoyed the outing and the island’s beauty, of course sold itself. SOCALPAPA Board President Steve Sandborg said the first two events could be models for organizing more paint outs to the island. He also noted the support of the community in helping the artists around town to painting locations.

“The two days on the island couldn’t have been better for our SOCALPAPA artists,” said Steve Sandborg said. “Avalon and its immediate surrounding areas provide endless iconic scenes that are a true joy for plein air painters. Hosted by Kymberlee Stanley with the support of volunteers from the local arts community, our SOCALPAPA members felt like VIPs from the moment we arrived on the island and were whisked along by golf carts to various pre-planned locations. We are truly appreciative of everyone’s help and are ready to start planning future visits by SOCALPAPA artists.”
