For the Islander

Catalina Island Conservancy’s remarkable celebration of art and conservation, Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale, celebrates its 13th year on October 22. The hybrid plein air art show will have a virtual component along with an in-person opportunity to view the awe-inspiring artworks and mingle with the artists at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Works of art, created by renowned plein air artists especially for this show, showcase the profound beauty of nature while raising awareness and funds for the urgent need to protect the natural treasure of Catalina.

This unique show will feature approximately 100 paintings produced by 10 nationally recognized artists. Plein air painting, the art of capturing scenes outdoors in their natural light, holds an intimate connection to Catalina Island. As artists set up their easels along picturesque shores and amidst rolling hills filled with endemic and native species, they immerse themselves in the Island’s soul and transpose its magic onto the canvas.

This year’s artists with works on display and available for purchase are Suzie Baker, Carl Bretzke, John Cosby, Andy Evansen, Terri Ford, Jane Hunt, Kim Lordier, Michael Obermeyer, Joe Paquet, and Ron Rencher.

“The artists showing at this year’s Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale will present their unique interpretation of the Catalina’s landscape with nature as an inspiration in one of a kind works of art,” said Victoria Seaver Dean, former Conservancy board member and event chair. “These works feature Catalina’s beloved wildlands stewarded by Catalina Island Conservancy, as well as scenes from Avalon and Two Harbors. As we enjoy these depictions of Catalina, we are reminded of the critical role we all play in preserving the Island’s beauty for future generations.”

Registered attendees will receive a copy of the digital exhibition catalog to see all paintings and view videos of the artists approximately one week prior to the show. General admission is free for both online and in-person attendees. Sponsorship and priority ticket options are available that provide early access to purchase paintings while also supporting Conservancy programs. Catalina Island Conservancy is very appreciative of the support of our Corporate Partners, especially Capital Group Private Client Services & J and Sarah Barnes, and Media Partner American Art Collector.

Access to registration is available online at www.catalinaconservancy.org/wildside.

About the Conservancy

Formed in 1972, the nonprofit Catalina Island Conservancy is one of California’s oldest land trusts. Its mission is to be an exemplary steward of Island resources through a balance of conservation, education and recreation. Through its ongoing efforts, the Conservancy protects the magnificent natural and cultural heritage of Santa Catalina Island, stewarding approximately 42,000 acres of land and more than 60 miles of rugged shoreline.

It provides an airport and 50 miles of biking and 165 miles of hiking opportunities within its road and trail system. The Conservancy conducts educational outreach through various programs for children and adults, its Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden and guided experiences in the Island’s rugged interior. Twenty miles from the mainland, the Island is a treasure trove of historical and archaeological sites. It also contains numerous rare and endangered animals and plants. The Island is home to more than 60 species that are found only on Catalina. For additional information, please visit www.catalinaconservancy.org.
