Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the period of April 14 to April 20, 2022.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
April 14
• Deputies were contacted at the Sheriff’s Station by a man regarding a possible restraining order violation. The man stated his sister had a restraining order against him and she was continuously violating the order.
Deputies explained the laws regarding such orders to the man and counseled him regarding his relationship with his sister.
• Deputies responded to a disturbance call on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. The caller stated he was being harassed by a man to whom he owed money. The caller stated he employed the man for a day job and would gladly pay him on payday which was Friday. The disturbing party was advised he would be paid and warned about his behavior towards others.
April 15
• Deputies responded to a suspicious person call on the 200 block of Metropole Avenue. The caller stated a male was in front of the business messing with the door at 2am. The deputies contacted the man and recognized him from numerous prior arrests. The deputies also knew the man was currently homeless. The deputies spoke to the man and asked him to leave the location. The man was cooperative and left without incident. Due to the man being homeless, Avalon Station personnel have reached out to the Sheriff’s Department Homeless Outreach Team, which is working on providing placement and services for the man.
Deputies responded to a trespassing call on the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The caller stated a male adult was sleeping on their private property. The deputies contacted the man and conducted an investigation. Christian Gonzalez 31, of Avalon, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
• Deputies and the Fire Department responded to a man who on the beach and unresponsive. The man was evaluated by the fire department and transported to Catalina Island Medical Center for further evaluation.
• Deputies received a vandalism report call on Crescent Avenue. The victim stated the tires on his truck were slashed by an unknown suspect. The deputies searched the location and were unable to locate the tire stabber. The case is under investigation.
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance at Whites landing. The caller stated a female was refusing to leave the location. Deputies contacted the informant who stated the female was refusing to pay for dinner and stated her meal should be comped. The deputies advised both parties the issue was civil in nature and did not rise to the level of law enforcement involvement.
April 16
• Deputies responded to a family disturbance call on the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The caller stated a male and female were arguing inside a hotel room. The deputies contacted the parties and conducted an investigation. The victim stated he and his girlfriend had been drinking at the bars and when they returned home, she assaulted him. Michele Martin, 24, of Port Hueneme, was arrested for alleged spousal assault.
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance on the Green Pleasure Pier. The caller stated a guest was refusing to leave although she was already refunded for her tickets. The deputies spoke to both parties and advised the unhappy customer the issue was a business dispute and not a criminal act.
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance on the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The caller stated a male was inside a hotel room and refused to pay his cab fare. Prior to deputies arriving the fare evader exited and paid his debt.
April 17
• Deputies and the fire department responded to the Cabrillo Mole regarding a boat crash near the crane. The deputies arrived and discovered a rental golf cart had driven over the parking barrier and into the Pacific Ocean. The driving believing the cart was in reverse pressed the gas causing the vehicle to move forward and into the sea. All parties involved were uninjured and embarrassed only.
• Deputies responded to a fight call at Catalina Avenue and Crescent Avenue. The caller stated two males were fighting at the location. During the fist fight, one of the males pulled a knife on the other combatant. Marcos Rodriguez, 29, of Avalon, was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon.
April 18
• Deputies were contacted at the station by an informant who stated she was having problem with her tenants. She stated her tenants were having people over and staying up to late. The deputies advised the landlord to address the issue in civil court.
• Deputies were contacted at the Sheriff’s Station by a man who stated his golf cart was stolen. The deputies conducted an investigation and located the suspect and the stolen golf cart. Marcos Rodriguez, 29, of Avalon, was arrested for alleged vehicle theft. The suspect was booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
April 19
• Deputies responded to a family disturbance call on the 200 block of Whittley Ave. the caller stated a male and female were arguing at the location. The deputies contacted both parties and determined they were arguing only.
