Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the period of Feb. 2 to Feb. 9, 2022.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
February 3
• Deputies responded to a family disturbance on the 600 block of Beacon Street. The caller stated her juvenile son was refusing to go to school and this was a daily occurrence. The deputies spoke to the young man regarding the importance of a good education and the benefits of attending school every day. The student agreed with the deputies and went to school.
•Deputies responded to a family disturbance call on the 300 block of Tremont Street. The caller stated she could not control her 10 year old daughter.
Deputies contacted the family and determined there was an argument which included yogurt throwing between sisters. The father arrived at the location and all parties were counseled.
• Deputies received a 911 hang up call from the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. The deputies responded to the location and contacted 2 female adults. The females appeared to have been drinking and stated the 911 call was an accident. There was no evidence of a crime at the location.
February 5
• Deputies were contacted at the Sheriff’s Station by a female adult who stated her cash box was missing from her apartment. The apartment was located on the 100 block of Clarissa Avenue. The deputies authored a theft report.
• Deputies responded to a fight call at the Chi Club. The caller stated a male adult was involved in a fight and was bleeding from a head injury. The deputies arrived and discovered a male adult was bleeding profusely from lacerations to his face and nose area.
The deputies conducted an investigation and determined the victim had been assaulted by a male suspect who threw a tumbler drinking glass at him. The suspect fled the location after the assault. Deputies arrested and booked Joel Hernandez, 31, of Avalon at Avalon Sheriff’s Station for alleged assault with a deadly weapon.
February 6
• Deputies issued a parking citation on the 200 block of Bird Park Road. The vehicle was cited for parking in front of a fire hydrant.
February 7
• Deputies responded to the Catalina Island Medical Center regarding an assault and battery call for service. A male adult was being treated at CIMC for injuries he suffered from an assault that occurred on the interior. The deputies determined the victim was involved in a fight with another male. During the fight, the victim fell to the ground and was kicked in the head by the suspect. The victim suffered a concussion during the assault.
The deputies contacted the suspect and arrested Luis Chamu, 23, of Long Beach for alleged assault with a deadly weapon (Shod Foot). He was transported and booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance at the Cabrillo Mole. The caller stated a Catalina Express boat was turning around and returning to the dock. The informant requested deputies stand by and keep the peace as employees escorted unwanted passengers from the boat. The deputies observed 2 female adults exit the boat without incident.
• Deputies responded to the helipad regarding a drunk female who was running around the closed heliport. The deputies contacted a female adult and advised her the heliport was closed. The deputies recognized the woman as the same person who was escorted off the Catalina Express. She was cooperative and left the location.
February 8
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to the 200 block of Whittley regarding a female adult who had ingested 10 prescription pills. The female was transported to CIMC for further evaluation and treatment.
February 9
• Deputies received a call for service regarding a stolen golf cart on the 100 block of Catalina Avenue. The caller stated his golf cart was stolen from the location. Prior to deputies arriving the informant called back to the sheriff’s station and stated he found his golf cart and it was a misunderstanding.
