Catalina Island Medical Center salutes its nurses next month for National Nurses week and announces a way for patients, families, community members, physicians and co-workers to help honor them.  “Our patients, residents and families have frequently shared with us how caring, compassionate and helpful they have found our nurses to be.  The DAISY Program will be an opportunity to recognize the many good qualities of our nursing staff, who are usually too humble to share the many touching stories, through this internationally known nursing recognition program.  All nominees will be recognized along with the announcement of the DAISY Award honoree” Catherine Rhyne, the hospital’s Chief of Patient Care Services shared.   The award announcement comes between May 6-12.

Founders Bonnie and Mark Barnes started the DAISY Foundation after their son

Patrick developed an auto-immune disease and died at 33 years of age. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Patrick’s loss  left a huge hole in his family’s hearts and a strong desire to do something to help keep his wonderful spirit alive. The Barnes were awestruck in realizing all that nurses do for their patients everyday,  They recognized not only the excellent clinical skill nurses had brought to Patrick’s condition and treatment, but especially the way his nurses consistently delivered  compassionate care.

There are now 23 professional nursing organizations supporting the DAISY Foundation’s mission to honor and celebrate extraordinary nurses.  In 2016 Catalina Island Medical Center will honor nurse nominees and  one recipient as a DAISY Award winner.

Showing compassion is at a nurse’s core and  Catalina Island Medical Center expects that there must be other patients and families who would want to express their appreciation through this meaningful recognition of nurses. CIMC and DAISY Foundation members believe the stories of extraordinary nurses need to be shared and celebrated all year long so that nurses can truly understand the impact they have on the lives of the people they care for. There are now over 2,100 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries, committed to honoring nurses with the DAISY Award.

DAISY Award honorees demonstrate the Catalina Island Medical Center (CIMC) principles of caring and professionalism. They also:

• Demonstrate passion/compassion for nursing and the care provided

•  Establish a special connection with patients and/or families

•  Keep the patient and their family at the center of care

•  Work collaboratively to create trust and promote teamwork

• Create an environment for others to learn

• Are committed to the highest standards of nursing excellence

Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony during our annual Nurses Day celebration, and will receive:

• a beautiful certificate

• a DAISY Award pin

• a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch

Over the years more than 60,000 nurses have been awarded this honor for their compassion, skill, innovation, and attention to patient safety. More  than 650,000 nurses have been nominated for a DAISY Award.

The announcement of CIMC’s DAISY Award winner will coincide with National Nurses Day which is celebrated annually on May 6. It will also mark the beginning of National Nurses Week, which ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
