Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Feb. 10 to Feb. 16, 2021. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
February 17
• Deputies assisted the San Diego Police Department with a suspected child abuse case involving a 2-year-old child that occurred in San Diego. The investigation is ongoing.
February 18
• Deputies responded to a silent robbery alarm at the US Bank on Crescent Avenue. It was determined to be an accidental activation and a security sweep was conducted by deputies.
• Deputies responded to the Medical Center regarding a discharged male patient who refused to leave the property. He had left the area prior to the deputies arriving.
February 19
• Deputies responded to a report of loud music in the 300 block of Marilla Avenue. The disturbing party was contacted and warned complied to lower the volume.
• Deputies responded to the 200 block of Whittley Avenue to check on the welfare of a resident who hadn’t been seen by relatives in months. Contact was made with a neighbor who saw the resident the day prior.
• Deputies responded to the 600 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a male adult who was yelling in the business and making a scene. The male displayed the objective symptoms of being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and unable to care for himself. Marco Torres, 34, Avalon, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.
• Deputies responded to Avalon City Hall/Peoples Park regarding a male who was hitting things with a golf club. The male was contacted and no criminal activity was found.
February 20
• Deputies responded to St. Catherine Way at Whittley Avenue regarding a report of a man weaving on the roadway and possibly driving under the influence. The man was contacted and it was determined that he had not been drinking or under the influence of drugs.
• Deputies responded to Lower Terrace Avenue to check a residence of a person incarcerated when someone reported that the blinds were altered. It was determined that family members were there the day prior cleaning the house.
February 21
• Deputies responded to reports of loud music complaints at the Atwater Hotel. The involved parties were warned and complied.
• Isthmus Boat Deputies and the Fire Department Baywatch responded to Catalina Harbor regarding a boater in distress. The vessel was safely towed to a mooring and secured.
February 22
• Deputies responded to E. Whttley Avenue regarding a person who had been drinking. The male adult was contacted and he was escorted back to his hotel.
February 23
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Beacon Street regarding a report of a medical alert of the resident who had fallen. It was determined that the medical alert was an accidental activation and the resident was in good health.
• Deputies responded to E. Whttley Avenue regarding a male who was being suspicious and looking into cars. The man was contacted but there was no evidence that a crime had taken place.

Health and Safety Code 11357 is the California marijuana law that sets forth the rules for personal possession of marijuana. The following are arrestable offences:
• Marijuana may not be smoked/vaped in any public place, including beaches or at any location where the smoking of tobacco is legally prohibited,
• Possession of marijuana by anyone under 21,
• Possession of more than 28.5 grams of marijuana or more than 4 grams of concentrated cannabis,
• Possession of marijuana or concentrated cannabis on the grounds of any K-12 school,
• Marijuana and cannabis products must be smoked or consumed in private, with the consent of the property owner. This means that your landlord or employer can prohibit your use of marijuana at work or on a property you rent.
• The sale and/or transportation of marijuana without a license is a felony offense.
