Sheriff’s Log: Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, 2021

Editor’s note: The fol­low­­­ing is the Avalon Sheriff’s Sta­tion significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, 2021. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

January 20

• Deputies and Fire Department Baywatch Personnel responded to Cat Harbor regarding a rescue call of a male adult on board a boat. The male was found unresponsive and unfortunately pronounced dead. The cause of death was determined to be natural causes

January 21

• Deputies responded to a suspicious person call and were told of two individuals tampering with wires near the ATM at Crescent and Clarissa Avenues. The station dispatcher updated the call and shared the two people were leaving the location in a golf cart and provided their description. The golf cart and individuals matching the description were seen near Tremont Street. Deputies made a traffic stop and detained them pending a possible theft investigation. Deputies determined that the city’s LED tree decorative rope lights were stolen and arrested Avalon residents Issac Rios, 24, and Amanda Cervantes, 36, on suspicion of petty theft.

January 22

• Deputies conducted high visibility patrols with no incidents to report.

January 23

• Deputies were conducting a patrol check at Vons market and were approached by an employee who informed them of a crime in progress.

Deputies made contact with an individual who had concealed four bottles of Tequila in his pockets. The Abdul-Lateef Omolola, 22, of Tempe, Arizona, was arrested on suspicion of petty theft.

January 24

• Deputies along with Fire Department personnel responded to Hamilton Cove regarding a traffic collision involving an overturned golf cart. Four people were treated on the scene and transported to the hospital for their injuries. The collision is being investigated and it appears that speed was a factor. The involved parties were from Carson, Inglewood, Victorville, and Tempe Arizona.

• Deputies are investigating the negligent and unlawful discharge of a BB gun with possible cruelty to an animal at the Tremont Street Apartments. There are reports of an individual shooting the BB Gun from a balcony in the direction of a cat. The cat was not injured.

January 25

• Deputies conducted frequent patrol checks of the waterside during the storm for water craft or persons in distress. There were no issues to report.

January 26

• Deputies conducted follow up on the BB Gun case at the Tremont Street Apartments and working to gain cooperation of the person involved.

With the recent stay at home order being lifted it is important that we all continue to remain safe while still observing the three main CDC recommendations:

• Wear a mask to protect yourself and others and stop the spread of COVID

• Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths) from others who don’t live with you

• Avoid crowds
