Editor’s note:
The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 13, 2021 to Jan. 19, 2021. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
January 13
• Deputies responded to the interior of the island, Divide Road at Lone Tree Trail, to assist the Conservancy Rangers with a man that was allegedly trespassing. Deputies arrested Jabbar Gereau, 48, of Long Beach on suspicion of trespassing. Deputies and the Rangers cleaned up two areas where the man apparently left his personal belongings.
• Deputies participated in the funeral procession for Saul De La Rosa. The procession was from the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church to the barge on Pebbly Beach. There was a large turnout for the procession.
• Deputies were contacted and provided video of an Avalon man prowling and peeping at the Tremont Street Apartments. Deputies identified the man and the case will be presented to the District Attorney for filing consideration.
January 14
• Deputies contacted an informant who found a cell phone near the Casino. Deputies were able to also locate the owner and return the cell phone.
January 15
• A another cell phone was found and turned into the Sheriff’s Station. Deputies were able to locate the owner and return it to her.
January 16
• An Avalon resident came to the Avalon station lobby to report being the victim of petty theft (a parcel). The parcel was tracked and delivered to her residence, but it appears it was stolen prior to her receiving it. The investigation is ongoing.
January 17
• Deputies arrested Jesus Meison-Tejeda, 21, of Avalon for suspicion of trespassing at the Bird Park Apartments. The man is not allowed to be on the property according to management.
January 18
• Deputies received a telephone call from a concerned family member who was reporting two of his family members missing believing that they were illegally smuggled from Mexico and into the United States. The investigation is ongoing with the help of other law enforcement agencies.
• Recently, two suspects stole a backpack while visiting Avalon. The backpack contained the victim’s credit cards, watch, business cards, and other items. A thorough investigation was conducted and the suspects were identified and lived in San Jacinto, California. Deputies served a search warrant at one of the suspect’s homes in San Jacinto and recovered the victim’s watch, business card, and all of the items the suspects purchased with the stolen credit cards (TV, speakers, toy set, jewelry, etc.). Deputies arrested . Elizabeth Solano, 34, of San Jacinto, for suspicion of identity theft, possession of methamphetamine, and child endangerment. The male suspect had recently been arrested and was in jail on an unrelated charge.
January 19
• Deputies were called to an area near the Descanso Beach Club regarding suspicious containers that possibly containing chemicals. Deputies and personnel from the Catalina Island Company responded and determined the containers only had water in them.
Safety Note
It is very important to make reservations for the Catalina Express so they know which size boat to use. Make your reservations by calling them, stopping by their ticket booth, or doing it online. People have been left behind because the boat was full. Do not let that happen to you.
