Editor’s note:
The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of July 1 to July 7, 2020.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
July 1
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Clemente Avenue regarding a man yelling and throwing items. Deputies arrived and arrested Joe Hernandez from Avalon on suspicion of domestic violence.
• Deputies arrested Jordon Osburn from Thousand Oaks on suspicion of being drunk in public. The arrest occurred at the pier.
• Deputies were called to Vons regarding a customer who stole a cooler. Deputies identified the suspect and will be presenting the case to the District Attorney for filing consideration, along with previous cases regarding the same suspect. Numerous stolen items were recovered and returned to the businesses they were stolen from.
• Deputies responded to the Descanso Beach Club regarding a female passed out in a golf cart with two 2-year-old children in the golf cart. Deputies arrested Amanda Sanchez from Avalon for allegations of child endangerment and being drunk after she was found allegedly passed out in the golf cart. There were empty alcoholic containers found in the golf cart. Luckily, the children were uninjured.
July 2
• Deputies received a call of a male exposing himself in the 300 block of Catalina Avenue. Deputies contacted the male and learned he was autistic. Deputies worked with the family members to ensure the male did not expose himself.
July 3
• Deputies responded to the Catalina Express regarding a passenger refusing to wear a face covering. Deputies contacted the passenger and he immediately put a face covering on.
July 4
• Happy 4th of July
• Deputies responded to a possible domestic violence incident in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The investigation revealed no crime occurred, and was only a verbal argument. Deputies arrested Miguel Cisneros from Riverbank, California for an outstanding $110,000 felony warrant for a previous incident involving domestic violence and an assault with a deadly weapon.
July 5
• Deputies arrested Nelson Figueroa from San Diego for stealing a cellular telephone from someone’s property who was sitting near the Wrigley Stage on Crescent Avenue. An Avalon Harbor Patrol Officer witnessed the crime and helped to locate the suspect. The suspect was placed under arrest on suspicion of grand theft. During further investigation, deputies called the cell phone and discovered it rang in Victoria Chavoya’s pocket, an Avalon resident. She was also arrested on suspicion of misappropriation of the stolen phone.
July 6
• Deputies responded to the Hamilton Cove Beach regarding juveniles harassing an elderly male. When the deputies arrived, they learned that a fight occurred, but the suspects had already left the scene.
July 7
• Deputies conducted patrol checks throughout the city of Avalon to ensure face coverings were being warn when appropriate. People that were not in compliance with the health order were told to wear a face covering and they immediately put one on.
