Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of June 12 to June 18, 2019. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
June 12
• Deputies received a call that a person on the island wanted to kill himself. The deputies were able to locate the man near Metropole Avenue and Crescent Avenue. The man told the deputies that he did not want to live anymore, and was going to kill himself. The man was transported to the mainland so he could get the help that he needed.
June 13
• Deputies responded to 1 Bird Park regarding a vandalism call. A suspect threw a trashcan into a large mirror in the restroom, shattering it. Witnesses identified the suspect and an arrest is pending.
June 14
• Deputies arrested Douglas Collins from Yorba Linda for suspicion of assaulting his 11-year-old daughter during an argument. The incident occurred at 888 Country Club Drive.
June 15
• Deputies and the fire department responded to a brush fire near Two Harbors. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire with only 2 acres being burnt. Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
• Deputies responded to 57 Pebbly Beach Road regarding two patrons involved in a verbal argument. Deputies learned one of the patrons threatened the other. The investigation is ongoing.
June 16
• Deputies responded to 1 Cabrillo Mole regarding a stolen bicycle. Deputies checked the area and found the stolen bicycle approximately one mile away on Pebbly Beach Road. The bicycle was returned to the owner.
• Deputies arrested Ramon Chavoya from Avalon on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol near Beacon Street and Descanso Avenue.
June 17
• An Avalon resident came to the Sheriff’s Station and turned in two firearms that he no longer wanted. Deputies took possession of the firearms.
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Maiden Lane regarding a vandalism call. Upon their arrival, they leared that a suspect broken four windows at the residence. The investigation is ongoing.
June 18
• First responders and deputies and responded to a helicopter collision on the west side of Catalina Island. One male pilot was pronounced deceased at the collision site. He was the only one aboard the helicopter. (See story, page 1.)
Safety Note
Deputies and the Harbor Patrol have been receiving calls of juveniles jumping from the fuel dock into the harbor. Not only is it unsafe to do so, but it is also illegal. Only swim in swimming designated areas.
