Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, 2019.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
January 30
• Deputies were contacted by an Avalon resident who was scammed out of more than $45,000 in three online scams. (Please do not send money especially overseas to people you do not know)
January 31
• Deputies issued two citations to Avalon residents for not stopping at stop signs. Both occurred at Catalina Avenue and Beacon Street.
February 1
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Sumner Avenue regarding two females arguing. Deputies learned threats were allegedly made. Deputies wrote a crime report and will be presenting it to the District Attorney’s Office.
• A visitor to the island lost her cell phone prior to returning to the cruise ship. After she left, deputies used a phone tracking program and the phone was located in a trash can inside Abe’s Liquor. The phone was returned to the owner.
February 2
• Deputies issued an Avalon resident a citation for expired registration and no proof of insurance at Beacon Street and Sumner Avenue.
February 3
• Deputies arrested Cecilia Velasco-Montano of Avalon on suspicion of drunk driving, (DUI above .08 percent blood alcohol concentration), child endangerment, and driving without a license.
February 4
• Deputies received a call of two individuals smoking marijuana at the stairs by East Whittley Avenue. Deputies contacted the two individuals, but did not see them smoking marijuana and they did not have any marijuana with them.
February 5
• Deputies arrested Alberto Rodriguez of Avalon on suspicion of urinating in public in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. He was issued a citation and will have a court date in the near future.
Safety Note
We receive calls almost daily about the marijuana laws. It is illegal to possess marijuana if you are under 21 years old, have over 28.5 grams of marijuana, or smoke it in public.
