With much anticipation for the start of the 2018 outrigger season, Catalina paddlers took to the water on April 2 as part of their Blessing & Beer event to kick-off the season. Approximately 35 paddlers were on hand as fellow paddler Pastor Andrew Hobbs led a prayer over the team and canoes for a safe and competitive season with a lot to be thankful for. Paul DeMeyer, fellow paddler and designated team historian, led a traditional blessing of the canoes as the men’s team parted for their first practice. Team members gathered at The Lobster Trap after practice for beer and a “toast.”
Event organizers thanked Billy Whitford and the team at Newport Aquatic Center for the paint job (even though it is orange) and new stenciling. The Catalina Team was stoked with the unveiling of canoe #802 and how well it came out.
With about 50 paddlers in total, combination of competitive and recreation, we look forward to a fun season and seeing the other teams up on the awards stage.
