Life on the Rural Side with Jessica Scofield

Last weekend was the best Fourth of July I have ever experienced.

Last weekend was the best Fourth of July I have ever experienced.

On the third we attended a barbecue with friends. The food was great; the company was better. It was the perfect start to a weekend of fun.

After the barbecue my family took a skiff out into the harbor to watch the fireworks. We drifted slightly as the waves lapped gently against the boat. The brilliant visual display of each firework preceded multiple booms reverberating off the island. The fireworks were spectacular, and their release over the ocean made the experience even more enjoyable. It was a wonderful show.

We spent the morning of the 4th at the children’s festival. What fun! The Island Company and local yacht clubs provided a half-dozen themed projects. My son loved the streamers on a stick that he received. He enjoyed eating the sugar cookie that we’d decorated with red and blue sprinkles. We also decorated a T-shirt to remember the occasion. The festive atmosphere, friendly adults, and happy children put me in an ebullient mood.

The final holiday activity was a dinghy parade. We walked to the pier to watch the dinghies gather before they paraded out. One displayed a small British flag, which to me was an amusing reminder of our reason for celebrating. Most of the dinghies were festooned with red, white, and blue; stars and stripes; and streamers; and occupied by people flamboyantly bedecked in the colors of Old Glory. The festive air, the holiday atmosphere, and a series of well-planned amusements made this my favorite Independence Day yet.

If you haven’t experienced a Two Harbors Fourth of July, what are you waiting for? Let next year be your first. I don’t think you’d regret it!
