Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 3 to Oct. 9, 2018. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
October 3
- No significant incidents
October 4
• A person reported that someone stole $1,000 from her purse while she was on the beach near Wrigley stage. Deputies conducted an investigation and determined the woman misplaced the money. The money was located in her property.
October 5
• A victim had his license plate stolen from his golf cart in the 300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue. The license plate was sitting in the golf cart when it was taken, due to the victim repainting his golf cart.
October 6
• Deputies arrested Joseph Scollard of Norco on suspicion of child endangerment, being drunk in public, and criminal threats at Shark Harbor.
The suspect was allegedly passed out drunk when his unsupervised 4-year-old son walked away. Three Good Samaritans found the 4-year-old near the cliffs/campground and held him until deputies arrived. The 4-year-old was taken into protective custody.
The Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the three Good Samaritans for keeping the child safe.
• Deputies responded to the 120 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a disturbance. Deputies arrested Mariano Jimenez of Avalon on suspicion of being drunk in public.
He had injuries and was transported to the hospital.
October 7
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision near Las Lomas Road and Marilla Avenue. A golf cart rolled onto its side. Two passengers suffered injuries.
October 8
• Deputies responded to the 120 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a male arguing with bar patrons.
The deputies defused the incident before any crimes occurred.
October 9
• First responders responded to the 300 block of Crescent Avenue regarding an intoxicated female that fell and hit her head. She was transported to the hospital and airlifted off the island for additional medical attention.
Safety Note
Remember, if you are so intoxicated that you are unable to exercise care for your safety or the safety of others, it is a crime. Someone might depend on you for their safety (such as a 4-year-old boy).
