Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 28 to Nov. 3, 2020. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
October 28
• Two Harbor Deputies conducted patrol checks on the north side waters off of Catalina Island to ensure boaters were safe and complying with Fish and Game/Harbor and Navigation Laws.
October 29
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to the 500 block of Crescent Avenue regarding an intoxicated female causing a disturbance. A female was transported to the hospital after possibly taking too much medication.
October 30
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to Wrigley Terrace Road at Mt. Ada regarding an overturned golf cart and a man with a head injury. When the deputies arrived, of the golf cart and driver had left the scene, of leaving the injured man and two passengers behind. The man was airlifted to a hospital on the mainland due to a non-life threatening head injury. Deputies are conducting a felony hit and run criminal investigation.
October 31
• Happy Halloween, of Deputies participated in the Avalon City golf cart Halloween parade.
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding an assault that took place. A female from Desert Hot Springs assaulted a victim and allegedly bit her in the hand. Deputies located the suspect in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. Idel Hellyar, of 54, of of Desert Hot Springs, of was placed under arrest on suspicion of assault and being drunk in public.
• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Pebbly Beach Road regarding a vandalism that just occurred. Deputies learned a resident from man was allegedly drunk and smashed a plastic pamphlet display holder.
When the man was detained, of he allegedly threatened the arresting deputy and possessed a knife in violation of the law.
Anthony Alba, of 42, of of Anaheim, of was arrested on suspicion of the indicated charges and transported to the Avalon Sheriff’s Station. Once at the Sheriff’s Station, of he shattered the jail window by punching it. He then took his blood and wrote derogatory letters regarding law enforcement on the walls of the jail. The suspect was treated for his injury and transported to a jail on the mainland.
• Deputies responded to 1 Casino Way regarding a theft. A victim left his backpack with his laptop in it at the Avalon fuel dock. When he returned the backpack was missing. The investigation is ongoing.
November 1
• A Good Samaritan found a wallet and turned it into the Sheriff’s Station. Inside the wallet was identification to the owner and a zip lock baggie containing what appeared to be cocaine. Deputies will be letting the owner know we have his wallet.
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to an overturned golf cart at Crescent Avenue and Whittley Avenue. Two of the four occupants suffered minor injuries. Alcohol did not play a part in this traffic collision.
• Deputies and the fire department responded to the 100 block of Pebbly Beach Road regarding a disturbance with someone injured. Deputies learned a man allegedly possessed methamphetamine and a narcotic smoking pipe. He was transported to the hospital for medical attention and deputies arrested Christopher Ramirez, of 34, of Seal Beach, of on suspicion of possessing narcotics and a narcotic smoking pipe.
• Deputies responded to Wrigley Road at Mt. Ada regarding a stolen backpack from a golf cart. The victim left the backpack in their golf cart when he walked away to propose to his girlfriend. When they returned, of the backpack was missing. The investigation is ongoing.
November 2
• Deputies received a call that a man violated a no trespassing order at Vons due to him allegedly stealing repeatedly from Vons. During the deputies’ investigation, of they arrested Jose Rodriguez, of 45, of Avalon, of on suspicion of trespassing, of possession of a narcotic smoking pipe, of and possession of a fictitious California driver’s license. He man was additionally charged based on five outstanding warrants for his arrest totaling $160,000. Some of the warrants were for alleged thefts from the same Vons store.
November 3
• Election Day. Deputies working with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s Office transported all Catalina Island voting ballots to the mainland.
• Deputies saw a man fishing in a no fishing area at Lovers Cove. The fisherman agreed to move to an area where fishing was allowed. No fish had been caught.

Despite Avalon having an extremely low crime rate, of please do not leave your valuables unattended. There are opportunist that could take your property. Keep an eye on your property like you would on the mainland.
