Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 17 to Oct. 23, 2018. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
October 17
• A person reported he lost his cell phone. Deputies were able to locate the cell phone in the 200 block of Sumner Avenue and return it to him.
October 18
• In the 100 block of Catalina Avenue, deputies arrested Osbaldo Hernandez of Avalon for an outstanding $20,000 warrant out of the city of Bellflower. The warrant was for suspicion of possessing a narcotic smoking pipe.
• Deputies arrested Jesus Rodriguez-Pacheco of Avalon on suspicion of allegedly receiving known stolen property in the 200 block of Catalina Island. A victim had her cellphone, hat, and vape electronic cigarette stolen from the beach. Deputies tracked the phone to the suspect. The suspect denied having any of the stolen items. The deputies called the victim’s phone and it rang in the suspect’s pocket. The other items were also found on the suspect.
October 19
• Deputies arrested Danny McCormick of Avalon near Hogsback Gate on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, suspicion of possession of a narcotic smoking pipe, suspicion of being under the influence of a stimulant, suspicion of drinking alcohol in a vehicle, and suspicion of smoking marijuana in a vehicle.
October 20
• A domestic violence victim went to Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station and reported that her boyfriend assaulted her while in Avalon. The suspect had already left the island. Deputies are following up with victim to locate the suspect.
• Deputies arrested Lucy Gonzalez of Avalon on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and suspicion of possessing a narcotic smoking pipe in the 150 block of Metropole Avenue. She was additionally charged with a probation violation.
October 21
• Deputies responded to the 500 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a domestic violence incident. Upon their arrival, they learned the couple were arguing and no crimes had been violated.
October 22
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision at Wrigley Road and Middle Terrace Road. The driver of a golf cart was traveling too fast and fell out of the golf cart. The golf cart collided into the guard rail injuring one of the passengers. Two adults were transported to the hospital by paramedics.
October 23
• Deputies participated in Red Ribbon week at the Avalon School. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.
