The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period May 23 to May 29, 2024.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
May 23
- Deputies responded to Sumner Avenue for a business disturbance. The caller stated a man was causing a disturbance and yelling in the parking lot. The deputies immediately recognized the man from prior contacts and their intuition was correct. They had spoken to the man when he first arrived and warned him his behavior would lead to problems on the beautiful island. The man was told he was no longer welcome at the grocery store. The man, realizing the Island life was not for him, left the next day on a departing ferry.
- Deputies responded to a vandalism in progress call on Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a man had broken a window at the hotel and was running up Whittley. The suspect was located as he punched a golf cart window and broke it. Jameson Vaden, 18, of Avalon, was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism.
May 24
- Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Sumner and Beacon. They observed a driver fail to stop at the posted sign. They issued the man a warning and advised him he would receive a citation if he was caught doing another California Roller.
May 25
- Deputies responded to a suspicious person call on Maiden Lane. The caller stated a man with no shirt on was knocking on hotel room doors. The caller recognized the man as a registered guest at the hotel. Due to it being 2 a.m., it was obvious the man had overindulged in adult beverages and couldn’t remember what room he was in.
May 26
- Deputies responded to a business disturbance on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. The caller stated a man and woman were causing a problem at the front counter. The deputies contacted the parties, determined they were only arguing and told them to return to their hotel room.
- Deputies responded to disturbance involving a drunk man on Crescent Avenue. The caller stated the man was drunk, harassing customers and refusing to leave. The deputies conducted an investigation and determined the man was drunk in public and had no one to care for him. During the investigation, they learned the man was so drunk, he kissed the doorman on his ear and displayed other unacceptable behavior. John Notaro, 32, of Torrance, suspect was arrested and booked on suspicion of being drunk in public.
May 27
- Deputies responded to a disturbance call at the Catholic Church. The caller stated a man and woman were drunk and being loud at the church. The deputies spoke to the parties, advised them it was Monday and if they wanted to attend services they could return Sunday at 9am, 11 a.m. or 630 p.m. The couple saw the light and left the church.
May 28
- Deputies responded to a domestic violence incident in Avalon harbor. Numerous callers stated a man on a kayak struck a woman on her head with an oar. The deputies had the man and woman paddle into the pier where they detained them for an investigation. Thomas Garland, 32, Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of spousal assault and booked at Avalon Station.
