Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the period of March 3 to March 9, 2022.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
March 3
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance on the 100 block of Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a male adult was trespassing at the business and climbing onto the patios. The caller also recognized the man as a resident who has been arrested in the past for trespassing. The deputies were able to contact the disturbing party and serve him with a Letter of Agency prohibiting him from trespassing at the property.
• Deputies responded to a possible drunk driver at Crescent Avenue and Metropole Avenue. The informant on the call stated the driver was driving erratically and had open containers in her golf cart. The deputies contacted the female driver who said she was trying to get to her boat on time. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol, and she made her boat on time.
• Deputies issued a parking citation on the 300 block of Whittley Avenue. The vehicle was illegally parked in a designated handicap stall.
March 4
• Deputies responded to a business disturbance call on the 400 block of Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a male and female were arguing in the hotel lobby. The deputies contacted both parties and determined they were arguing because the boyfriend was receiving phone calls from other women.
March 5
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision involving 2 golf carts at the intersection of Beacon Street and Descanso Avenue. There were no injuries or significant damage to the vehicles.
• Deputies responded to a disturbance at the Post Office. The caller stated a male adult was throwing objects and causing a disturbance. The deputies contacted the disturbing party and recognized him as the same person who was climbing on the patios 2 days earlier. The deputies warned the disturbing party about his behavior and determined no crime had been committed.
March 6
• Deputies received a call of railing missing from the side of the road at Pebbly Beach and Abalone Point. The deputies checked the location and were unable to locate any vehicles off the roadway or floating in the Pacific Ocean.
• Deputies received a possible stolen golf cart call on the 100 block of Catalina Avenue. The caller stated a missing golf cart was in the parking lot and was being occupied by a male adult who was drinking beers. The deputies contacted the male and determined the cart was not stolen and had been borrowed from a friend.
• Deputies responded to call of a possible man with a gun call at Crescent Avenue and Sumner Avenue.
The deputies detained the possible suspects and determined they were not in possession of a firearm.
March 7
• Deputies responded to a trespassing call on the 300 block of Catalina Avenue. The caller stated an unknown male was seen inside the location.
The deputies arrived at the location contacted a male adult inside. They conducted an investigation and determined it was a painter who was hired by the owner.
March 8
• Deputies received a petty theft report call on the 100 block of Crescent Avenue. The victim stated her cell phone was taken.
The deputies conducted an investigation and reviewed video surveillance from the location.
During the investigation deputies learned the alleged suspect had found the phone, charged it at his home and returned it to the victim later in the evening once it was charged.
There was no crime at the location, just a good citizen doing a good deed.
• Deputies responded to a spousal assault call in Hamilton Cove. Deputies contacted the suspect and victim and conducted an investigation.
They determined both parties were married and were involved in a physical altercation. Chad Cannan, 68, of Oceanside, was arrested on suspicion of spousal assault and was booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
March 9
• Deputies conducted a welfare check on the 100 block of banning Drive.
The deputies spoke to the resident and determined she was doing well and did not need any help from the police or fire departments.
