July 31
• Deputies received a call about an illegal vendor at Tremont Street and Sumner Avenue. The food seller had a L.A. County food permit and is in the process of obtaining a city permit. He was warned about selling food without a city permit.
August 1
• Deputies received a call at Bird Park regarding a family disturbance. The informant’s son was under the influence of drugs and causing a disturbance. The son had left the residence before the deputies arrived. Deputies will be following up with the family regarding the illegal drug use. No other criminal laws were violated.
August 2
• Deputies arrested Mitchell Bagby of Chico, California, and Bryce Porter of Santa Monica on suspicion of using counterfeit California driver’s licenses to get in and purchase alcohol in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue.
• A victim reported her purse was stolen out of a golf card after she accidently left it in the golf cart and went into a nearby restaurant in the 300 block of Crescent Avenue. When she returned a short time later, the purse was missing. Deputies are checking video of the area.
August 3
• An employee from one of the local Avalon bars brought in 17 fake identification cards from various states that had been confiscated from people trying to use them.
August 4
• Deputies arrested Ernesto Gomez-Rodriguez of Avalon on suspicion of drunk driving. The incident occurred at Wrigley Terrace Road and Clemente Avenue.
• Deputies at Two Harbors received a call of a domestic violence incident that occurred on a boat inside the harbor. Deputies learned that a girlfriend assaulted her boyfriend and then left the island. Their 8-month-old son who was present was not injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
August 5
• Deputies arrested Sergio Alexander Vallejo of Avalon on suspicion of embezzling money from the Catalina Island Company while working at the Casino movie theater.
August 6
• An Avalon resident came to the Sheriff’s Station and reported his 72-year-old father missing. The missing person was last seen in the city of Torrance.
Safety Note
I have received a lot of questions about active shooting incidents due to the recent number of them across the United States. The Avalon Sheriff’s Station regularly trains with other first responders on the island and with the Avalon School.
