Sheriff’s Log: July 3 to July 8

The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of July 3 to July 8.

“It is important to note that no assumption of criminal guilt or affiliation should be drawn from the content of the information provided in this report.  Many people who get arrested do not get convicted or even charged with crimes for which they have been arrested,” said Capt. Doug Fetteroll, commander of the Station.

July 3

The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of July 3 to July 8.

July 3

Nickolas Hajek, M/22, a resident of Two Harbors, was arrested for starting an unlawful fire to an inhabited structure (a vessel) in Little Harbor.

• Kathryn Newlander, F/29, a resident of Avalon, was arrested for assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and battery on a peace officer.

July 4

Joseph Brain, M/43, a resident of Huntington Beach, was arrested for boating under the influence of alcohol in Avalon Bay.

• Yafet Mengesha, M/21, a resident of Avalon, was arrested for drunk in public.

July 5

Taylor Vanderwall-Kelly, F/19, a resident of Avalon, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon (bottle).  

The investigation into the alleged assault is on-going.

July 6

Lon Gaither, M/46, a resident of Venice, was arrested for drunk in public.

July 7

A visitor from Paso Robles drove a rented golf cart into a parked vehicle in the 100 block of Catalina Avenue.  

There were no injuries.

• A woman’s ring was stolen from a store in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue.  

July 8

A business in Avalon reported being the victim of a grand theft (U.S. currency).  The alleged theft occurred in May of 2014.

Skating on the mainland

Last week, as part of the Sheriff’s YAL Summer program, Deputy Flotree escorted a few local teenagers to a skate park in Long Beach.

Golf carts

Four golf carts were reported stolen this week.  

One golf cart was taken from the 100 block of Claressa Avenue and found parked around the corner 30 minutes later.   

A golf cart was taken from Casino Way and found within the hour parked in the middle of the street in the 100 block of Catalina Avenue.  

A golf cart was accidentally taken by a visitor and returned approximately an hour later.

The fourth golf cart was taken on July 7 from the 200 block of Sumner Avenue and as of July 8 has not been located.
