Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Jan. 19 to Jan. 25, 2023.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
January 19
• Deputies on patrol observed a vehicle on the 200 block of Whittley Avenue without a city vehicle permit. The deputies issued the vehicle a citation.
January 20
• Deputies responded to a disturbance call on the 300 block of Descanso Avenue. The caller stated the neighbors alarm clock was going off. The deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the noise. It appears the neighbor had awoken from the slumber and hurried off to work.
• Deputies responded to a disturbance call involving a boyfriend and girlfriend on the 600 block of Beacon Avenue. The caller stated his girlfriend was accusing him of stealing her property. The deputies counseled both parties and determined no crime had been committed. The upset girlfriend took her cat and left the location.
• Deputies conducted a traffic stop at Tremont Street and Avalon Canyon Road for a vehicle code violation. The driver was issued a citation for the violation as well as a 2nd citation for an outstanding 25k warrant.
January 21
• Deputies on patrol observed a vehicle parked on the 300 block of Whittley Avenue without a city vehicle permit. They issued a citation for the violation.
• Deputies on patrol observed a golf cart commit a violation of the 200 block of Sumner Avenue. They contacted the driver and discovered he did not have his instructional permit. They issued a citation for the violation.
• Deputies on patrol saw the driver of a vehicle throw an item onto the ground. They issued the driver a citation for littering.
January 22
• The captain was on patrol when he saw the driver a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. He contacted a traffic stop and warned the driver to correct his driving habits.
January 23
• Deputies responded to a disturbance call at the “Casino”. The caller stated a man was yelling obscenities at people as they walked by. Detective Meyers contacted the disturbing party and recognized him from prior contacts. He calmed the man who stated he was trying to spread the message. The man agreed to spread his message as he meditated.
January 25
• Avalon Station Personnel, the Fire Departments and city officials participated in a debriefing exercise covering the shooting incident on Wrigley Road. The exercise is critical for maximizing and utilizing resources on the island during emergencies.
