Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Feb. 6 to Feb. 19, 2019. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
February 6
• Deputies received a call of someone using counterfeit $20 bills on the 300 block of Crescent Avenue. Deputies contacted all of the involved parties and are conducting an investigation. The counterfeit bills will be sent to the U.S. Secret Service.
February 7
• Deputies received a call of a domestic violence incident on Pebbly Beach Road. The suspect assaulted his girlfriend and left the island. Deputies will be arresting the Anaheim man and present the case to the District Attorney’s Office.
February 8
• Deputies conducted surveillance at Sumner Avenue and Beacon Avenue regarding traffic issues. Please obey traffic laws. There are a lot of pedestrians and vehicles in this area.
February 9
• Since the new Vons opened, there is additional traffic near Sumner Avenue and Beacon Avenue. Deputies issued a motorist a citation for failing to stop at the stop sign.
February 10
• Deputies were contacted by a victim who reported a suspect exposed himself to her on the 200 block of Metropole Avenue. The suspect has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
February 11
• Deputies responded to 129 Whittley Ave. regarding a domestic violence call. When the deputies arrived, they could hear yelling coming from inside the location. Deputies learned that a boyfriend and girlfriend were arguing; however, no laws had been broken.
February 12
• Deputies received a call from a property owner who discovered that a suspect had placed an ad on Craig’s List renting his Avalon residence. The real property owner was renting his residence on a legitimate travel website. The investigation is ongoing to determine who placed the fraudulent ad.
Safety Note
When renting on Catalina Island, ensure you go through a legitimate rental company. If you are renting from an owner, confirm that you are actually communicating with the owner of the residence.
