The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Dec. 4 to Dec. 16, 2024. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
December 4
- Deputies responded to a hit and run traffic accident on Clemente Avenue. The caller stated a man driving a limo style golf cart hit her parked vehicle and drove away towards 3 palms. When the deputies arrived, they observed debris from the collision including a golf cart wheel. They immediately began searching for a 3 wheeled golf cart and located it a short distance away. It’s a little bit of a challenge to get away when you’re missing a front wheel. The deputies contacted the driver and detained him for a hit and run investigation. Hugo Canas Rivas, 31, of Commerce, was arrested on suspicion of hit and run and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
December 5
- A sergeant on patrol observed a juvy riding an electric motorcycle at Banning and Country Club. He conducted a traffic stop and issued a ticket for being an unlicensed driver and not having his motorcycle registered.
December 7
- Deputies responded to a disturbance at the Pleasure Pier. The informant stated the man on the mooring next to him was yelling and possibly drunk. The deputies went to the mooring and spoke to the disturbing party. The man did not display signs of being drunk and told the deputies he was going inside his cabin and did not want to converse anymore.
December 8
- Deputies responded to the Pleasure Pier for a disturbance call. The informant stated the man who was yelling at his neighbor the night before was causing a disturbance in the harbor. The deputies along with harbor patrol contacted the irate man and assisted him with his mooring relocation.
December 9
- A deputy on patrol observed a golf cart driving on Crescent Avenue. He conducted a traffic stop and spoke to the driver. The driver was apologetic and stated she did not see any signs prohibiting driving on Crescent Avenue. The deputy escorted the golf cart back to Sumner Avenue.
December 10
- Deputies responded to Casino Point for a 911 call. The caller stated he and his dog were on his kayak and they were sinking. When the deputies arrived, they located the man and dog who were out of the water and standing in the parking lot. The man was a little moist, but I guess that is expected when you kayak at night and there is a slight swell.
December 11
- A deputy was walking through the Plaza when he observed 2 men chasing each other and yelling. He recognized the men as 2 local men who often times overindulged in adult beverages. The deputy made his presence known and the child-like behavior was immediately corrected.
December 13
- Deputies responded to Whittley Avenue for a possible domestic violence. The deputies contacted a man and woman who were arguing. The woman stated during the argument, her boyfriend pulled her hair and pushed her. After an investigation, the deputies arrested Suspect Juan Tamayo, 23, of Avalon, on suspicion of domestic violence. He was booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
December 14
- Deputies at Two Harbors received a call from a woman who stated she had not heard from her husband for 1 day. The woman said her husband was on their boat and she was worried about him. The deputies conducted a check of the coastline and located the man near Goat Harbor. The man was doing great and enjoying a little “Me Time”.
December 15
- Deputies received a 911 hang up telephone call from Airport Road. They attempted to call the number back multiple times and received no answer. Fearing the caller might be in distress, they conducted a search of the area where the telephone was pinging from. They located the caller 4 hours later enjoying a nice dinner in Avalon. The 911 call was a pocket dial.
- Deputies responded to a dog bite call on Casino Way. When they arrived, they located a woman suffering from a dog bite to her left forearm. The woman said she was walking on the boardwalk when she was suddenly bitten by a large dog. The dog allegedly got off its leash ran towards the woman and bit her. The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment.
December 16
- Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Casino Way. The caller stated a man on a bicycle with a guitar was chasing a white golf cart. The deputies searched the area and did not locate any victims or suspect. However, they do know a local man who matches that exact description. The sergeant located the guitar carrying man and counseled him regarding his behavior.
