Volunteer of the Year—James J. Poindexter

In 1978, J.J. Poindexter formed Avalon Station’s Search and Rescue Team.  The team has proudly served not only our residents, but all of the visitors to Catalina Island for the past 37 years.  The team holds the distinction of being the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s most senior volunteer program.  J.J. has been instrumental in obtaining training, equipment, and developing the expertise required to perform hundreds of searches and technical rescues since its inception.  J.J.’s professionalism, love for the island and compassion for people has been the foundation for the development and success of the S.A.R.
