Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Feb. 19 to Feb. 25, 2020. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
February 19
• Based on two outstanding warrants, deputies arrested Jaime Rangel from Avalon on suspicion of narcotic violations totaling $80,000.
• Deputies arrested Oscar Vega from Avalon on suspicion of residential burglary. The burglary occurred on January 24, 2020, in the 300 block of Sumner Avenue. Detectives were able to identify the suspect and place him under arrest.
February 20
• Deputies responded to the Avalon School regarding a juvenile who was causing a disturbance in a classroom. The juvenile was disrespectful and was using profanity toward school staff. No criminal laws were violated.
• Deputies arrested a juvenile in the 300 block of Descanso Avenue for assaulting her mother. The juvenile was transported to the mainland to be seen by a doctor.
February 21
• A found license plate was delivered to the Avalon Sheriff’s Station. The license plate was found in the ocean. It had not been reported lost or stolen. It will be returned to the owner.
• Deputies responded to a traffic collision near Descanso Beach Club. It was a rolled over golf cart and there were only minor injuries. Alcohol or drugs did not play a part in the traffic collision.
February 22
• Deputies responded to the 600 block of Crescent Avenue regarding someone causing a disturbance in a business and refusing to leave. Deputies contacted the disturbing party and determined no criminal laws had been violated. The disturbing party was issued an order not to return to the business.
February 23
• A visitor to the island found a bone on the beach near Descanso Beach. They brought it to the Sheriff’s Station to determine if the bone was from a human. The L.A. County Coroner’s Office determined the bone was not a human bone.
February 24
• Based on two outstanding warrants totaling $21,000, deputies arrested Carlos Carrasco from Avalon on suspicion of trespassing, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, and traffic violations.
February 25
• Deputies responded to the Avalon School regarding marijuana use. Deputies arrested one male and one female juvenile for possession of marijuana vape pens. A third juvenile was also arrested for trying to destroy evidence and possession of marijuana. All of the juveniles were released to their parents.

If you legally possess marijuana in your home, please keep it locked up so your children cannot get to it.
The Sheriff’s Department is called to the Avalon School regularly for juveniles possessing and smoking marijuana at school.
