Catalina Island Company invites all residents to its 3rd annual Mexican Posada celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Catalina Country Club. A Posada, which is Spanish for “inn” or “shelter,” commemorates the Biblical story of Mary and Joseph and their search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.
During a Posada celebration, members of the community hold candles and sing Christmas carols as they follow two individuals representing Mary and Joseph through town to a designated home, where they sing a special song (La Cancion Para Pedir Posada) asking for a place to stay.
Avalon’s version of this Christmas tradition starts at 5 p.m. at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, where the procession to the Country Club begins. Those unable to participate in the procession can show up at the Country Club around 5:30 p.m. for homemade tamales, beans, rice and refreshments prepared and served by Island Company employees.
An inflatable “bouncy” house, piñata and other activities will be available for kids, who will also receive a “goodie” bag to take home, courtesy of the Catalina Island Company.
