Attention Avalonians: The Catalina Island Museum and Elizabeth Turk Studios are offering an opportunity to become a part of the art during a moving installation on Saturday, July 13, from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. The event is admission free. The event, “ThinkLab LIVE .003 – Tipping Point: Are We Creating a Silence?,” includes music, dance, speakers and YOU alongside internationally recognized artist Elizabeth Turk for a truly unique experience.
“Tipping Point,” is the latest body of work by the SoCal native. While furthering her exploration into the overlap of art and nature, Turk confronts a globally important issue: Extinction. “Tipping Point” employs performance, sculpture, sound and technology to ask: what role do humans play in the preservation of species’, including our own? Are we at a tipping point?
“Extinction as a concept, even as a conversation, overwhelms us so deeply, we remain silent,” said Turk when describing the project. “Tipping Point is an artwork created to open this sensitive topic, without conclusions, only respect for a natural world much larger than we are.”
Saturday’s event, “Tipping Point; Are We Creating a Silence?” is modeled after Day of the Dead celebrations where joy and respect are experienced simultaneously. Join the ET Studios production crew to create an art performance and installation by artist Turk. This evening in the arts includes a dance by The Assembly Dance Co., the sounds of world-renowned composer Michael Mortilla and violinist Nicole Garcia, insights from Turk, a brief talk from an expert on extinction and the public.
Turk will give an overview of the project followed by a brief talk by Colleen Wisinski, M.S., conservation program specialist from the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research. As an essential part of the event, you are asked to wear white clothing. Turk and her team will guide you through the process of creating a “Light Canopy”, where you will write messages in the sky with a light wand naming what you treasure most. Messages will be captured on long exposed film and video. Imagery of the entire evening will be revealed at a later date.
The event takes place at the Museum this Saturday, July 13 from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to sign up.
