More Than Pink Avalon joins cancer fight

For the second year, Islanders and visitors joined to support Cancer awareness and cures in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Avalon hosted a “Walk & Paddle” beginning at noon on Saturday Sept. 14, adjacent to Wrigley Stage.

Over 40 people joined the walk which went from the waterfront to Casino, to Cabrillo Mole and back to the starting point. Added this year was Catalina Island Health who partnered with Alinea Health to provide two full days of Mammogram screenings. In total over 60 women got screened in the mammogram unit.

Sponsors and organizers of the event included Love Catalina Island, City of Avalon, Hotel Metropole, Catalina Xtreme Parasail, Susan G Komen Foundation and Alinea Health with special thanks to Avalon City Council Member Yesenia Delarosa and Avalon Fire Department for event coordination. A companion larger event is set for Oct. 5 in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA.
