A public memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, for Avalon Harbor Patrol Officer Timothy Douglas Mitchell at Casino Dive Park.
At noon, the Catalina Express “Cat X” and all other vessels will depart Float 5 and proceed to Little Farnsworth (just offshore from the Southern California Edison plant) for a scattering of the ashes. The family will be aboard Rescue 2 and all other boats will shadow Rescue 2 while the ashes are released.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Mitchell from noon to 6 p.m., at the M Restaurant at 205 Crescent Ave., Avalon.
Check in at Catalina Express San Pedro Terminal http://www.catalinaexpress.com/port-san-pedro/san-pedro-port.html (Berth 95, San Pedro) at 7 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. departure. Greg Bombard of Catalina Express donated the 300-passenger “Cat X” to transport anyone from the mainland who would like to come to the Island for the service. The “Cat X” will also take those people back to San Pedro at 5 p.m.
According to the Avalon Harbor Patrol, the Avalon Fire Department has made their station available for anyone who wishes to wait there prior to the 10 a.n. services at the Casino Point. “Avalon Fire can assist with transportation or any other items that may be requested. Please make contact with the uniformed fire department member that will be dockside in Avalon when you arrive if you need any assistance. Light refreshments will be served,” said an online statement.
A fund has been set up for Mitchell's family and donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to: Avalon Harbor Employees Association, PO Box 1085, Avalon, CA 90704.
