Hocking has worked a variety of assignments throughout his career on the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He started working in the L.A. County jail system.
He has worked at Carson Sheriff’s Station, South Los Angeles (Lennox) Sheriff’s Station, the department’s testing unit, and the media unit where he wrote press releases and was on numerous television news channels reporting on a variety of crimes.
Hocking said, “I believe in community-oriented policing. This basically means, the community lets the Sheriff’s Department know what they want us to focus our attention on. Working with the community, the deputies are able to keep crime stats low in the city of Avalon.”
Hocking holds an associate’s degree in police science, a bachelor’s degree in criminal law/occupational studies, and a master’s degree in homeland security/terrorism.
Hocking now lives in the City of Avalon. He said, “Living in Avalon has been a dream come true. Not only do I get to run a Sheriff’s Station, but I get to do it on a beautiful island.” Captain Hocking also commented on how supportive and helpful the Avalon City Council members and the City Manager David Jinkens have been.
