The Avalon Boys Varsity Basketball Team put themselves in a position to win another league championship by defeating Acaciawood Academy at home in back-to-back games this past weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 24, the Lancers came out on all cylinders and jumped to a 24-9 1st quarter lead, in route to a 62-37 victory. The Lancers had a balanced attack with 4 players scoring in double figures. Daniel Madriz had 13 points, Jesse Machado and Sol Vines each had 12 points and Allen Arneson contributed 11 points to the cause. Tony Ramos, Beto Martinez, Dominic Hernandez and De’Angelo Reyes provided defensive pressure all over the court.
The following day the Lancers overcame a season long slump of poor morning games and showed up ready to go. They led 26-9 at the end of the first quarter and never let up, winning by a final score of 79-40.
Allen Arneson led all scorers with 21 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds. Rylan Flynn backed up Arneson with a season high 11 points and Daniel Madriz added 10 points to the offensive surge. This was a total team victory as everyone got in on the action. Everyone played and everyone scored. These weekend games were also important as we saw the return of Angel Peguero and Steven Hoefs. Both players have been sidelined all season with injuries.
The Lancers are now 6-1 in league play and will play two important games at home this Friday, Jan. 31, against St. Michaels at 4:30 p.m. and then the next day against Brethren Christian at 1:30 p.m. Senior Night will be on Wednesday, Feb. 5, against Samueli Academy at 5:30 p.m. We will honor our nine graduating players before the game. Come on up and cheer us to victory!
