The Avalon High boys volleyball team is off to a solid start in Express League play at 4-0 before break this week. The Lancers (11-8 overall) were back in action Thursday (past press time) and will play Acaciawood on Monday.
But the Lancers are looking to challenge for the league title and could be capable of a deep run in the playoffs. Avalon is ranked third in this week’s CIF-SS Division 7 poll. League rival Orangewood Academy is ranked No. 5 and the two schools are scheduled to face each other in the final week of the season.
Avalon Head Coach Carlos Martinez said the team is looking sharp and playing well. The Lancers have some young players contributing, but also senior leadership with guys like outside hitter David Mulgado. Junior outside hitter Jacob Mello also provides a lot on the offensive attack, as does sophomore left-hander Erick Madriz.
“We’re good all around, I think we definitely have powerful hitters,” Martinez said.
Junior Aaron Meza is becoming the most consistent setter and looks like he will be the main guy in that pivotal role. Sophomore Nathan Jones is trying his hand at volleyball after contributing some heavy hits on the football field. Jones is picking up volleyball quickly and Martinez said his presence in the middle blocker spot could be a big plus.
Junior Uriel Gonzalez has become a consistent performer on the back row and looks like the primary candidate to handle the libero position, anchoring the back row as the defensive specialist.
Martinez said the team has been able to move players around and try different roles, looking for the right combinations. He said they are starting to find their niche and the team is beginning to gel.
“It’s just working together but it’ll come together,” Martinez said.
