Local groups hosted a kayak cleanup on Monday, Sept. 23 and together, the nine kayakers collected more than 1,000 pounds of debris. And the kayakers got some vital help in getting all that debris back to the dump site.

One of the organizers, Kayla Feairheller, founder and president of Bleu World, gave a huge shout out to Harbor Master Orne Carstarphen, who showed up with his boat to help haul the debris off the beach. She noted that they couldn’t have done it without him!

Report from Feairheller: This event was significant and incredibly impactful. The debris from the shipwreck you see in these photos has been strewn across the beach for months and underneath that, debris has accumulated here for years finding its way deep into the rocky shoreline and drifting out to sea. The beach we cleaned sites right next to an important ecological site on the island known as “shark alley” due to leopard shark breeding grounds that can be found here which makes this cleanup even more important so that we can protect the species beneath the surface that call this spot home.

“Thank you to our 9 volunteers who spent most of their day making a difference for the ocean,” Feairheller said. “This community is inspiring in so many ways.”
