A large gathering of the community came together on June 14 for a ceremony at the fish weighing station on the pier, to honor the late Rosie Cadman.

Doug Miller, President of the Tuna Club Foundation, dedicated a plaque that has been placed on the station, honoring Rosie as the “Rosie Cadman Memorial Weigh Station.” Rosie, who was Avalon’s official weigh master for over 38 years, weighed literally thousands of Marlin, Swordfish, Tuna and other game fish over the years.

Several members of Rosie’s family, Tuna Club members and friends were present, and Rosie’s true friendship to Tuna Club members and the angling community was recalled. She always had a huge smile and a hug, when you arrived to weigh in your marlin.

The Harbor Master’s office would shoot off the cannon, which drew dozens of tourists, asking what kind of fish that was, and where did you catch it?

Besides inside the Tuna Club Clubhouse, there are only two people with plaques around town, that the Tuna Club has honored. The first, was in 1926, for the Tuna Club’s founder, Charles Fredrick Holder. His plaque is across from the Tuna Club at Holder Rock. The second, ninety-nine years later, was the one honoring Rosie Cadman.

The ceremony ended with a toast to Rosie and the shooting off of the cannon, from the Harbor Masters office.
