Adults and children alike come to Joe Machado Field in Avalon last weekend to fly kites.
About 60 individuals participated throughout the day, according to Community Service Supervisor David Hart .
“The City sold Kites for 5-10 dollars to those who did not have one,” Hart wrote in a recent email.
“The city also bbq burgers and hotdogs, with bag of chips and soda for $5. Awards were given out to best homemade, highest flown, and longest flown,” Hart wrote.
Although participants had fun, one kite enthusiast reported less than ideal winds at the event.
“It was my pleasure to attend and fly what would fly into the light winds that were available,” wrote Craig Adams in an email to the Islander website.
“The first few hours it took a lot of dancing with the kites to keep the 4 or 5 that I had prepared for the day,” Adams wrote.
“The 10 foot spikey ball never got enough wind to dance as it had been known to,” Adams wrote.
“I’m happy that some children were able to get a photo with it when it managed to pop up a few times,” Adams wrote.
Adams also thanked city of Avalon staff for providing him with a wheel chair to help him conserve his energy.
“I had a most wonderful time,” Adams wrote.
