Guest Column: Even in times of sudden change, Catalina offers an abundance of dining options

Recent announcements by Gov. Gavin Newsom restricting indoor dining has invited some swift and creative action on the part of a consortium of island restaurateurs, the city of Avalon, and the members of the Catalina Island Tourism Authority (aka Love Catalina Island).

Outdoor dining options have increased, including new pop-up beachside dining along Crescent Avenue, dining with a seaside view at Descanso Beach Club, and even expanded poolside options at The Cove (located at the Holiday Inn Resort). Most venues that have always had outdoor dining will continue to offer those options and several have added additional tables street-side.

Among the Avalon restaurants that have opted for beachside dining under a temporary permit are Maggie’s Blue Rose, Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood, NDMK Seafood and Luau Larry’s.

Other restaurants are in the submission process and will add to that mix. Beachside dining is limited to the hours of 5 to 11 p.m.

The beachside dining locations were encouraged by Council member Lisa Lavelle at a meeting in June, well in advance of the governor’s directive; however, the subject lingered until the sudden closure announced last week.

A small area for food booths is also being developed adjacent to Wrigley Stage for take-out only.

Patios and rooftops are perennial favorites and, now more than ever, hotels are taking advantage of those spaces to offer guests breakfast or evening wine with a view — all while socially distancing.

Food delivery options round out the ways to make up for the lack of indoor dining options, with several pick-up or delivery services available.

Most outdoor activities remain open and additional options are being added to help you enjoy your stay. Love Catalina Island has compiled a list of what’s open on the island, which is being updated hourly. Please visit LoveCatalina.com to view the list and other travel-related updates.

Restaurants and licensed food vendors interested in temporarily offering dining or take-out in these locations are encouraged to contact Jim Luttjohann by email at jim@lovecatalina.com.
