Supporters and opposers of the proposed Vons grocery store to be built on the Island will have a final chance to speak their mind before Avalon’s City Council makes a decision.
On Tuesday Aug. 4, during the regular City Council meeting, a final hearing will take place and the project will be either given the go ahead or be stopped.
“There will be a full house in the council chambers and the public will be quite vocal. I believe the community will react civilly and demonstrate decorum,” said Avalon Mayor Ann Marshall. “It distresses me that public comment is so divided.”
Supporters of the project feel this is exactly what Catalina needs because it would be a great service to the entire community. Those in opposition have attacked the project based on the predicted water allotment. They argue that the new Vons will consume much more water than expected.
“I can only hope that compromise may overcome the issues presented on all sides and we will all enjoy a great grocery store in the not so distant future,” said Marshall.
For those in support of the project there will be a gathering at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 at the Peoples Park, which is across from City Hall.
