The Catalina Medical Center will hold a COVID vaccine clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 3. It will be for residents Catalina Island only, provided they are more than 65 years old or essential workers. For details, visit the hospital website.
The local COVID testing numbers hadn’t changed in a week as of Wednesday, Feb. 24, according to Mayor Anni Marshall. She delivered the news during the 50th broadcast of “Minutes with the Mayor,” her weekly program that began after the pandemic began.
The numbers posted on the Catalina Islander Medical Center website match the numbers posted the previous week.
Marshall also said some LA County restrictions were being lifted. She was hoping to see indoor sports return soon.
That’s the good news.
The sad news: Avalon flags will fly at half-mast until sundown today, Friday, Feb. 26, to mark the more than half million American deaths attributed to the pandemic.
Mayor encourages
mourners to write obituaries
During her 14-minute broadcast, Marshall reflected on the lives lost. She said it had been difficult during the pandemic to have celebrations of life with many people present.
Marshall suggested it was important to write obituaries. She said she wasn’t sure if “cathartic” was the right word, but she suggested there was value in writing a loved one’s obituary. “I’m sure the Catalina Islander would put that in there,” she said.
Marshall said during the almost year-long crisis, a lot of people have passed away—either because of COVID or other causes. She said people used to write obituaries to let others know that their loved ones had passed away.
“And it was always nice to kind of put a closure on these people’s passing,” she said.
Marshall said posting an obituary on Facebook didn’t seem “warm and cozy” to her.
