Following a public hearing, the Avalon City Council last week unanimously approved a new fee schedule for city services. There were no comments from the public.
Mayor Anni Marshall proposed adding ebikes to the bike license. “Or if we’re not going to do it, just get rid of it all together,” Marshall said.
Finance Director Matthew Baker said the city charged a bicycle storage fee but people seldom claim bicycles. Baker suggested a public outreach to encourage more people to license their bicycles.
City Attorney Scott Campbell said the code could be interpreted as including ebikes.
“Be nice if they rode them like bicycles,” said Councilmember Michael Ponce.
Baker said they did increase the vehicle fee to $50 per vehicle.
He said staff was looking at administrative and code enforcement time on the vehicle stickers.
“I really like how you streamlined the price for people to participate in sports,” said Councilmember Mary Schickling.
Sewer and salt
water fees
The council also unanimously approved sewer and salt water fees. The vote was taken following another public hearing. Again, no members of the public spoke.
“Sewer is increased by three and-a-half percent and that was outlined in the cost of service study,” Baker said.
“Salt water is being increased by two-and-a-half percent and that was again outlined in the cost of service study,” Baker said.
For solid waste, Baker said staff proposed an increase of seven-and-a-half percent.
According to Baker, a lot of the solid waste increase is the landfill closure/post-closure costs, as well as the costs to fund the landfill expansion.
