Catalina animals get a gift from Betty White

Campaign in honor of late actress reaches Catalina

Following the death of Betty White just shy of her 100th birthday, a viral campaign to donate to animal shelters and organizations picked up steam. According to reports, donations increased immediately following her death on Dec. 31.

The idea of celebrating what would have been her 100th birthday on Jan. 17 with a donation also began trending. The trend also caught on around Catalina Island, as donations to the local Catalina Island Humane Society benefitted from an surge in donations.

Sharon Gorelczenko confirmed that the Catalina Island Humane Society received approximately $2,500 in donations during the Betty White campaign.

“We were extremely humbled and pleased by how much our community donated to Catalina Island Humane Society,” Gorelczenko said.

Betty White had become known for her lifelong support and work in helping animal organizations. In 2006 she was honored as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador to the Animals” and she supported animals through her own fan club with Bets’ Pets.

Donations can still be made to the Catalina Island Humane Society, which is also always in need of volunteers to help care for the animals. If you can spare an hour a week or would like to donate, visit catalinahumane.org or call 310-510-1900 for more information.
