Braving the Shave to fight cancer

On Saturday March 15 Avalon held its inaugural St. Baldrick’s fundraiser, called Avalon Braves the Shave. The last few years a few locals have participated in the one hosted in Long Beach. Sabrina Garza was the fearless leader with the help of many other.

A couple hundred people passed through the event and bought food from Catalina Charlies and Avalon Smokehouse. Lots of raffle tickets were bought, and there was always someone in the beer garden.

The event ended up raising just over $47,000 and shaved 59 heads. St. Baldrick’s is a nation-wide foundation that raises money for childhood cancer research. For more information visit stbaldricks.org.

A shout out goes to Sabrina, Noah, Serena and Steve Pedroza, Jeanie and Gasper Garza, Bear Garza, Stephanie Campbell, Lily and Lucia Alegria, Yoli and Joe Say, Lexi, Ben Guzman, Olivia LaSalle, Alison Robinett, Megan and Natalie and Steven from Catalina Charlies, Santiago and crew from Avalon Smokehouse, Paul and Tracy Romo.

Another round of thank you goes to the barbers who donated their time. Lourdous Thorict, Melissa Soto, Amanda Hernandez and the two barbers from the mainland, Angel and Brandy.

We did the event to honor a few of our own who have had cancer.

Brayden Pedroza who had neuroblastoma and has been in remission for two and half years.

Ben was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute, Lymphatic Leukemia and he remains in active treatment.

We also honored Dayannara Tamayo who passed away a few years ago after being diagnosed with a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. It was so rare that out of half a million kids, only five get diagnosed and only one will survive.

Last but not least a huge shout-out to Mr. Gary Johnson. He alone raised just over $25,000 on his page alone. A big thank you to our community and look for us to run it back here next year.
