A couple falls in love on the Isle of Romance

Margarita Diaz and John Henry Jackson have a lot of special dates to mark their courtship. Both moved to Catalina Island in 2012.

They met at the Post Office (duh!) in August of 2012. Diaz says, “of course he was picking up a package and he grabbed my hand.”

The pair’s first kiss was on New Year’s Eve 2012 at the stroke of midnight at JL’s (Dec. 31, 2012)

Jackson professed his love for Diaz on May 25, 2014, biking the East End trail. She told him “I love you” as well on that day.

He proposed while camping at Ben Westin Beach Feb. 14, 2015.

Their wedding date is May 9, 2015. And where will they live?

“We plan on spending the rest of our lives here on Santa Catalina Island,” Diaz said.

The couple have other traditions as well.

“We have a special “No-Kissing” bench here on the island … it all started in the beginning of our courtship. We would go on long walks at night, we grabbed frozen yogurt then walked hand in hand and sat on our bench staring at the stars,” Diaz said.

Then the courtship turned into bike rides and camping trips to the other side of the island. The pair think of Ben Westin as “our special beach.” Both are Catalina Island Conservancy Level 2 Certified and frequently ride their bikes into the interior too.

The couple will be married in Burbank, where Jackson, 39, is from. He works at Eagle Electric Construction on the Island. Diaz, 40, will continue her job as Catalina Island Postmaster.

But both almost bride and groom have planned an event for their “Island Family” too.

The invitation reads, “Please join us to celebrate the Marriage of Margarita Anne Diaz to John Henry Jackson at The Sandtrap the Island on Tuesday, May 12 at 6 p.m.”
