More than 600 boxes delivered as part of a series of community events
Love Catalina, the official Tourism Authority for Catalina Island, has wrapped up various Earth Day activities for 2022 with a successful Community Shredding event. Based on participation from the community, the inaugural event will become an annual occurrence to help mitigate paper waste on the island.
“We’re incredibly happy with the participation by local businesses and residents who delivered over 600 boxes to the Shred drop off at Avalon Freight Services,” said Love Catalina Island Events Manager Janet DeMyer. “The files removed from various storage units and closets will free up much needed space in our small island homes and places of business.” Corodata and Avalon Freight Services will be responsible for the transport to and secure shredding on the mainland.
Thirteen businesses and three residents dropped off a total of 632 file boxes filling 1 ½ shipping containers, keeping paper out of the waste stream on Catalina Island. Of the businesses dropping off materials for shredding, the Catalina Island Conservancy delivered the most boxes at 329.
The Shred event was the last in a series of Earth Day inspired efforts to Care For Catalina, including Love Catalina staff and members participating in events that cleaned the community of trash and debris, removed over 9,000 invasive plants and built awareness of the need to protect the precious island ecosystem that makes Catalina the best place to live, work and recreate.
DeMyer added, “A very special thanks is owed to Avalon Freight Services for allowing the use of their facilities, the Catalina Island Conservancy for coordinating the invasive plant removal project and the City of Avalon Community Services Department for the Community Clean-up event.”
